On December 13, 1711, the City Council of New York City passed a law “that all Negro and Indian slaves that are let out to hire…be hired at the Market house at the Wall Street Slip…” This slave market, located in modern-day Wall Street and the East River, was the city's first sanctioned slave market, preceding sites that would crop throughout the city throughout slavery.
